THE BACKGROUND
A Digital Product Passport connects a product to structured information about it. The applicable information, access rights and start dates depend on the product category and the relevant EU legislation.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) establishes a framework for product requirements, including Digital Product Passports. Detailed obligations are set through product-specific rules.
ESPR · Regulation (EU) 2024/1781Article 77 of the EU Batteries Regulation sets this start date for passports for light means of transport batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric vehicle batteries placed on the market or put into service.
Batteries Regulation · Article 77There is no single DPP start date for every product. Other categories follow the requirements and application dates in their respective product-specific legislation.
European Commission · ESPRA general introduction, not a product-specific compliance determination. Always refer to the applicable legislation and its current amendments.
PREPARE WITH PURPOSE
Preparation for Digital Product Passports starts with three connected areas.
Identify the product category, models and relevant supply-chain roles before deciding which requirements may apply.
Bring product specifications, supporting documents and their sources into a clearer, more consistent structure.
Consider what information needs to stay private, what may be shared and how changes should remain traceable.
